Mount Pleasant Primary School

Science Club 5X Summer Term 2022

Tuesday 5th July 2022

Today we tried to make it rain.

Friday 1st July 2022

Today Science Club were lucky enough to attend Burnley College Science Festival.

We all had a fantastic time and took part in four different activities;

making a galaxy in a jar

making bird feeders

testing games made by students at the college

meeting Titan the Robot from BGT.

Tuesday 28th June 2022

Today we were challenged to build a stable structure at least 30cm tall. The structure had to be strong enough to hold a toy car of our choosing. We worked in pairs and had 30minutes.

Tuesday 21st June 2022

Today we have made paper aeroplanes and tested them on the school playing field.

Tuesday 14th June 2022

Making Slime

Today in Science Club we have made slime using;

 PVA glue

Baking soda

Food colouring

Contact lens solution.

Science Club Tuesday 10th May 2022

Foaming Fizz

Today in Science Club we have investigated the effect of bicarbonate of soda on different liquids:

Cold water

Vinegar

Lemon juice

Tuesday 3rd May 2022

Can you push a crayon through a closed bag full of water?

Today we were given the challenge of pushing 10 crayons through a closed food bag full of water. We talked about if we thought it was possible or not. Most of thought that it would not be possible so we investigated.

It worked and we were able to push the crayons through the food bag. This is because the food bag is made of sticky molecules in a chain. When you break the chain, the molecules stick to the pencil which closes the gap.

Tuesday 26th April 2022

Today we have been out in the local area litter picking.

We filled two bags with rubbish (cardboard boxes, crisp packets, carrier bags, empty bin bags, lighters, drink bottles).

We are really proud of the work we have done today to help clean up the local environment.

Science Club 3X Spring Term 2022

Tuesday 29th March 2022

Chocolate crispy cakes

Today in Science Club we have investigated the effect of heating chocolate in the microwave. We talked about how the heat gave the particles energy and changed the solid chocolate bar into liquid.

We then used the melted chocolate to make crispy cakes.

Tuesday 22nd March 2022    Moving Images and Magic Spinners

Today in Science Club we have explored moving images and learnt how we can trick our brains.

We made magic spinners, that if you spin fast enough look white/grey even though we coloured then red, green and blue.

We made a spider spinner by drawing a spider on one side and a wed on the other. If we twirled it round using string, the spider looked like it was on the web.

We had lots of fun today.

Tuesday 15th March 2022

Today we have investigated particles in solids, liquids and gases. We learnt that the particles in a solid are tightly packed together and that is why they are hard to break. We learnt that the particles in liquids are able to move around but will bump into each other. We learnt that the particles in gases move freely around and rarely bump into each other.

Then, we investigated how different liquids behave together.

Tuesday 8th March 2022

Today we have been out in the local area litter picking.

We filled two bags with rubbish (cardboard boxes, crisp packets, carrier bags, empty bin bags, lighters, drink bottles).

We are really proud of the work we have done today to help clean up the local environment.

Tuesday 1st March 2022

Today we decided to make a rainbow using skittles, warm water and a plate.

We found that the warm water dissolved the food colouring and created a rainbow.

Tuesday 22nd February 2022

Today Class 3X met for the first time as a Science Club.

We talked about all the things that we would be doing over the next few weeks.

We learnt all about chromatography (a method used to separate mixtures), linking it to the work we have completed on colours in our Art lessons.

We used:

filter paper

felt tips

water

tray/bowl.

Have at look at our results and see what you think.

Maybe have a go at home and let us know how you got on.

Science Club 4X Autumn Term 2021

Tuesday 14th December 2021

Today was the last time that Year 4 were going to be meeting as Science Club as we are offering it to another year group after Christmas.

We made Christmas baubles by cutting up wax crayons, placing them in a bauble and then using a hairdryer to melt the crayons.

We had lots of fun today and have enjoyed being part of Science Club.

Tuesday 7th December 2021

Today in Science Club we had a fun session as it is very nearly Christmas. We played a game using:

a bar of chocolate

a knife and fork

a dice (numbers 1 - 6)

a hat

a scarf

a pair of gloves.

If you roll a 6, you have to put the hat, scarf and gloves on and start cutting the chocolate bar up. If you manage to cut one piece then you get to eat it. You keep going until someone else rolls a 6.

We had lots of fun today.

Science Club Tuesday 30th November 2021

Paper Airplanes

Today we investigated thrust and lift by making paper planes. We were given some simple instructions and allowed to choose the material we used to make our plane;

Card   Paper

Glue    Scissors    Tissue paper     Sellotape    Felt tips.

We worked by ourselves to follow the instructions and create our planes. We then had a flying competition to see whose plane flew the furthest. We talked about how we thrust the plane forward and it then lifts up and glides.

Tuesday 23rd November 2021

Can we push a crayon through a food bag filled with water?

Today we were given the challenge of pushing 10 crayons through a closed food bag full of water. We talked about if we thought it was possible or not. Most of us thought that it would not be possible so we investigated.

It worked and we were able to push the crayons through the food bag. This is because the food bag is made of sticky molecules in a chain. When you break the chain, the molecules stick to the pencil which closes the gap.

Litter Pick

Today in Science Club we have completed a litter pick around the local area. We found lots of empty crisp/sweet packets, empty cans and lots of plastic. We think that it is really important to look after our local environment so that it looks cleaner and is safer for the wildlife.

Maybe you could help by collecting some litter on your way to and from school?

Send us some photos of you litter pick.

Tuesday 9th November 2021

  Milk Fireworks

Today in Science Club we have created milk fireworks using:

milk

a plate

food colouring

washing-up liquid

cotton bud/paintbrush.

Instructions

  1. Pour some milk onto the plate
  2. Add a few drops of food colouring
  3. Dip a cotton bud/paintbrush in the washing-up liquid
  4. Touch the milk with the cotton bud/paintbrush and watch what happens.

The food colouring does not mix well with the milk. But, when washing-up liquid is added, it is attracted to both the food colouring and the milk, allowing them to mix together.

Tuesday 2nd November 2021

Foaming Fizz

Today in Science Club we have investigated the effect of bicarbonate of soda on different liquids (water, washing up liquid, vinegar and lemon juice). We found that the bicarbonate of soda did not react with the cold water but did react with all the other liquids.

Vinegar and lemon juice are acids and when mixed with the bicarbonate of soda they change and produce carbon dioxide, which makes it froth and fizz.

We had lots of fun today and agreed that some of us are 'Mad Scientists'.

Tuesday 12th October 2021

Litter Picking

Today in Science Club we have completed a litter pick around the local area. We found lots of empty crisp/sweet packets, empty cans and lots of plastic. We think that it is really important to look after our local environment so that it looks cleaner and is safer for the wildlife.

Tuesday 5th October 2021

Dancing Balloons

Today in Science Club we have investigated how to make a balloon dance. We created a negative charge in the balloon by rubbing it on different surfaces and then held it close to a hanging balloon. We all managed to get our balloon to dance.

We then tried to get our balloons to stick onto the wall.

Have a go at home and send us your pictures.

We also had some fun racing the balloons on different surfaces.

Tuesday 28th September 2021

 Skittle Rainbows

Today was our first meeting as a Science Club. We talked about the kind of activities that we will do over the coming weeks and then got into our first investigation.

We were challenged with making a rainbow using:

A plate

Warm water

Skittles.

We then used the laptops to research why the skittles and warm water created a rainbow.

The Science Behind this Rainbow Science Experiment:

Skittles are coated with sugar and food colouring. When you add warm water to the Skittles, the sugar and food colouring start to dissolve. They have similar amounts coated on them so they dissolve at similar speeds and stay in their lanes.

Have a try at home and email your results to school.
